Galava Roman Fort Ambleside

Ambleside Roman Fort dates from the 2nd century. Its well marked remains are located on the shores of Lake Windermere.

Hadrian built the fort to guard the Roman road from Brougham to Ravenglass and subsequently to act as a supply base.

Ambleside Roman Fort is the modern name given to the remains.

The ruins have been identified as those of either Galava or Clanoventa.

The fort was mentioned in the Antonine Itinerary.
